If you're heading for the coast, drop in on the sixth annual Jambalaya Cook-off in Lincoln City.
It will be held with Mardi Gras flair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Culinary Center, 801 S.W. Highway 101.
Jambalaya varies widely from cook to cook. It always contains rice, but a variety of other ingredients can be used, including tomatoes, onions, green peppers and almost any kind of meat or seafood.
Seven Northwest chefs will compete for Best Jambalaya, which will be judged by a panel of professional judges, and People's Choice, judged by the public.
Admission to the cook-off is free, with samples of the jambalaya available for 50 cents or serving size portions for $3 to $5. There also will be King Cake to sample, a Mardi Gras tradition.
There will be beer and wine for purchase along with soft drinks, a bakery will sell cupcakes and a trio will play live Zydeco-style music.
For more information, call 800-452-2151, or go to www.oregoncoast.org/jambalaya-cook-off.
