SUNNYSIDE -- A Filipino Foodfest is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday to raise money for a scholarship named in the memory of a Sunnyside teacher.
Friends and family of the late Sandra Lee Pascua, a teacher at Sun Valley Elementary who died in May after a three-year battle with cancer, have established the Sandra Lee Pascua Scholarship Award, in conjunction with the Sunnyside Dollars For Scholars Foundation.
Pascua was a teacher in the Sunnyside School District from 1987 until her death in 2011. She was one of the first three teachers awarded the Golden Apple recognition in the award's first year in 2002, her husband Rey Pascua told the Herald.
All proceeds will go to the foundation.
Never miss a local story.
Tickets cost $15 per person, or $25 per couple. Guests may purchase tickets at the door.
A meal and entertainment will be provided. The menu for the ethnic Filipino-themed lunch includes: pancit, pan fried noodles; lumpia, Filipino spring roll; chicken adobo, stir fry vegetables and steamed rice; seasonal desserts; and beverages.
Performing at the event are Batang Wapato, Tri-Cities Filipino folkdance group, a tae kwan do self-defense team and Sunnyside High School dance team.
The event will be at the Navarro Community Center on the corner of Sixth Street and Franklin Avenue in Sunnyside.
Canned, processed and preserved vegetables often have a high sodium content. Instead, follow this tip from the American Heart Association, and look for low-sodium veggies or try the frozen varieties.
At the store, compare the sodium content on the nutrition facts label of different brands and choose the ones with less sodium.
If you do choose to buy canned veggies, rinse them under cold water to reduce the sodium level.
