The tulips are out and winemakers are releasing their new vintages, so it's time to celebrate spring in the Yakima Valley.
Forty wineries from Richland to Yakima will hold open houses as part of Spring Barrel Tasting, Friday through Sunday, with discounts for wine purchases, appetizers to sample and, of course, plenty of new wines to taste in the bottle and barrel.
The wineries generally will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some will be charging for tasting, though they normally waive it if you make a purchase.
Premier passes, which get you extra goodies to munch and sip and tours not generally available, are available at several locations. Cost is $35. The passes are available in Richland at Goose Ridge Estate Vineyards, in Benton City at Tapteil Vineyard Winery, in Prosser at Airfield Estates and Kestrel Vintners and in Zillah at Claar Cellars. Take a glass because they won't have time for dish washing. Premier pass holders can pick up a limited edition 30th-anniversary wine glass.
Have your pass validated with at least six wineries during the weekend and pick up a complimentary keepsake wine glass at Kana Winery in Yakima, Airfield Estates Winery in Prosser or the Yakima Valley Visitor Information Center, 10 N. 8th St.
YVCC open house
The Yakima Valley Community College's vineyard and winery also will be open during Spring Barrel Tasting. Samples of the college's award-winning wines will be poured in the tasting room from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Students will give tours of the facility and man several educational stations, including a wine sensory table and a food and wine pairing table.
The student club also will be selling cut wine barrels for planters.

Texas Roadhouse is holding a special lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to benefit the Boys and Girls Club.
The menu will offer a pulled pork sandwich or a barbecue chicken sandwich each with fries and a drink. Cost is $8. Take-out orders also will be available.
