To find Kennewick's newest bakery, just follow your nose. Tuesday afternoon, the aroma of cinnamon rolls fresh from the oven hit your nose even before pushing open the door to Lonardo's Gourmet Bakerie.
But once inside it's your eyes that are delighted. The bakery cases hold a wide variety of sweet delights including yeast and cake doughnuts, bear claws, cinnamon rolls, cookies (their selection changes every few days), fruit and cream pies by the whole or by the slice and biscotti.
Ty Bates' sinfully rich cannolli are his specialty while Karen Lonardo's are breads, with the selection changing daily. Soon, she'll even have sourdough -- Lonardo mixed up her starter a couple of days ago.
"We can't compete with the big bakeries but want to offer a little bit of everything," Bates said.

She honed her skills baking at Kennewick General Hospital and Three Rivers Convention Center. Bates' background includes working as room service manager at KGH, at Richland Gardens retirement home and at Jakes Cafe on Highway 395 in Kennewick.
Since opening the bakery, the energetic duo find they spend well over half their day there.
"It's like having a newborn. You're tired but love it," Bates said.
Bakery hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, including weekends. Their phone is 582-5000. Special orders are welcome with one or two days notice.
If your nose doesn't lead you there, head for 1505 W. Kennewick Ave., across from the Tri-City Country Club golf course.
Market hours changed
The hours for the Kennewick Farmers Market have been changed to 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays. The market opens for the season Thursday and runs through September. It's held in the parking lot of Key Bank, at the corner of Auburn Street and Kennewick Avenue.
In addition to produce, market vendors also offer baked goods, soups, deep-fried catfish and hushpuppies, and arts and crafts.
