HBO Max Adding Taylor Sheridan's 'Hell or High Water' in June 2026
If you've been dying to watch Hell or High Water, it now has a new streaming home. The neo-Western crime drama left Netflix back in May and will land on HBO Max in June.
Premiering on Aug. 12, 2016, in the United States following a successful festival run, Hell or High Water follows two brothers, a divorced father and an ex-con, as they orchestrate a series of heists at the bank that's foreclosing on their family ranch.
It stars Chris Pine as Toby Howard, Ben Foster as Tanner Howard, Gil Birmingham as Texas Ranger Alberto Parker, Dale Dickey as Elsie, Katy Mixon as Jenny Ann, Amber Midthunder as Natalie Martinez, and Jeff Bridges as Texas Ranger Marcus Hamilton. David Mackenzie (Outlaw King) directed the flick from a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan.
Hell or High Water is considered to be the second installment in Sheridan's American Frontier Trilogy. 2015's Sicario, starring Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro, is the first of said trilogy, with 2017's Wind River, starring Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, as the third. It scored four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Supporting Actor for Bridges.
Critically, Hell or High Water was well-received, with outlets like Deadline praising it for "revitalizing the Western genre." The American Film Institute (AFI) selected the movie as one of its Top 10 Films of 2016. In 2021, members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the West and East chapters, voted Sheridan's screenplay as one of the WGA's 101 Greatest Screenplays of the 21st Century (So Far). It sits at No. 64. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an impressive 97 percent Tomatometer score, with an 88 percent Audience Score.
HBO Max is adding a number of titles to its platform in June, including A History of Violence, Midsommar, Isle of Dogs, and Contagion. You can stream these films, along with Hell or High Water, on June 1, 2026.
