As a young man, Gary worked for several dry-land wheat farmers driving tractor and combine. Gary worked at Chef Reddy Foods, the Milwaukee Railroad, farming and then retired from Burlington Northern Railroad in 2002. After retiring he worked for the Othello School District as a mechanic and school bus driver. Gary served as a high school booster club president and Othello ambulance driver for several years along with volunteering for the Othello Fire Department. They lived in Othello for 28 years before moving to Pasco in 2006.
They are active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
