It was with great interest that I read the recent spread in the Herald about the excavation of Hanford artifacts. Then the Herald had its own editorial on the poignancy of seeing how people lived at Hanford in the 1940s. I'm afraid that I have another perspective on this.
I realize this concept may be lost on a community of people who consider a government paycheck an inalienable birthright, but this activity is a complete waste of tax dollars. We are not talking about prehistoric Kennewick Man here. We are talking about 65 years ago. There are photographs, written records and even newspaper stories about how people lived back then. What critical new historical information are we gaining from this? In an era of trillion-dollar annual government deficits that threaten our country's solvency, we are spending our tax money excavating shaving mugs from the 1940s. I have to admit it's a great story. It's pretty unbelievable.
