This concerns the Herald editorial "Potential organ donors should be sure to register" (Our Voice, Oct. 26)
I honestly feel the public needs to have more information before making this kind of decision. The editorial states: "Washington does not require family consent for donation" and "this form can be printed from www.donatelife today.com." This organization works with the state licensing department. Did you understand they are not required to inform a family prior to removing the organ?
A quote from their web page states: "Organs are not recovered for the sole purpose of research. Once removed, if the organs are found to be unsuitable for transplant or a recipient cannot be found, they may be provided for research." Did you understand the organ might be sold?
I am an organ donor but not through the Washington driver's license program. I have removed my name from the Donate Life Today database.
I encourage all to be organ donors, but become informed before you make this decision. Check out their web page -- ask questions. And when you decide to become an organ donor, with or without this organization, discuss it with your family. Let them know about your decision.
