Cartoon misleading

In an editorial cartoon Oct. 14, a reporter asks President Obama this question: "What do you have to say about the BBC report that shows we have seen no global warming over the last 11 years?" In fact, the conclusion reached in the article the cartoonist refers to is contradicted by the UK Met Office (aka Hadley Center) from which the journalist got his data.

According to the Met Office (and to NASA, and others) the last 10 years are by far the hottest decade in recorded history, contain eight of the 10 hottest years, and global temperatures have increased 0.07 degrees Celsius during that period. Global cooling? Unfortunately, no. A pause -- maybe -- but the forecasts are for increasing rates of warming in the next two decades.

The article did not report anything but the writer's opinion. His (Paul Hudson's) blog states he is a "weather presenter and climate correspondent for BBC Look North in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire" and "worked as a forecaster with the Met Office for more than 10 years."

In the cartoon, Obama answers, "You're welcome." A better reply is, "Talk to the Met Office scientists instead."
