Initiative 1033: No

I urge every voter to educate themselves about I-1033. Please do your research on both sides of the initiative to make an informed decision. Although on the surface I-1033 looks inviting with its promises of controlled government revenues and reduction in property taxes, it creates unfairness to the citizens of our state and would have a negative impact on many programs and services.

More than half of the state's general fund is generated from sales and use tax. However, only the property owners will see a reduction in their property taxes if revenues exceed the cap created by I-1033. Everyone in this state pays taxes, but only property owners (which includes large businesses) will see the refund.

In a time of recession where our budget has been significantly reduced, I-1033 would lock in these cuts and would only allow revenues to increase by an amount equal to general inflation and the general population growth. Such adjustments will not be sufficiently flexible to accommodate actual increases in costs of providing services such as education for our children, health care and human services in our state.

Educate yourself about this initiative and vote NO on I-1033.

KERRILYNN ROBINSON, Richland
