Referendum 71: Approve

It was ironic that the Tri-City Herald chose to publish its editorial concerning Referendum 71 on the same day that thousands of LGBT Americans and their supporters were marching in Washington D.C. demanding equal treatment under the law (Oct. 11). Unfortunately the Herald editorial board could not muster the courage to do the same and could only offer a weak appeal to voters to "vote their conscience."

My conscience tells me that to deny any group the equal protection of the law as guaranteed by both the state and federal constitution is both unconscionable and morally reprehensible. R-71 does nothing more than ensure that all families have equal rights and responsibilities under state law. It in no way infringes on the rights of others or imposes any requirements that those who disagree participate.

Opponents of R-71 continue to use fear and distorted "facts" to sway voters away from their firm commitment to equality. Don't be fooled by their hysterical ravings over the dangers of gay rights none of which are supported by reputable data or real world experience. Don't let fear win. Vote to approve R-71.

LISA SHELTON, West Richland
