KSD: Adams, Kintzley

The League of Women Voters forum for Kennewick School Board candidates made this very clear: Uby Creek's positions are contradictory. She claims she wants parents to be more involved, yet advocates taking away parental choice for "doubles" classes. She stated that some teachers don't like "doubles." But 99 percent of parents want those extra classes for their children to bring them up to grade level.

Creek says she's a voice for all children. Yet she urged the school board (minutes Sept. 24, 2008) to transfer Ready! for Kindergarten funding to the ECEAP program, for which she works. This would eliminate a wonderful learning opportunity for 900 children while serving fewer than 200 in ECEAP (at nearly $7,000 more per child!). Considering budget woes, this is fiscally irresponsible.

Creek says her Latino perspective is needed. Yet teachers tell us that the very programs she criticizes the sharpest are a particular help to children for whom English is a second language.

Dawn Adams and Heather Kintzley also spoke, convincingly so, of their commitment to all students and parents.

It's clear that parents want a choice. All children deserve a chance. Fiscal responsibility is a must. The leadership that will deliver these is Adams and Kintzley.

STEVE & PATTY KESSIE, Kennewick
