Adams/Kintzley

I was troubled by Mr. Valiant's letter to the editor (Sept. 30).

If you've taught classes beyond third grade, you know how much more difficult it is to teach a class when you have students who can't read at grade level. Kennewick schools are very focused now on helping students who are behind catch up and read at grade level. The experiences of both students and teachers are enhanced when this is accomplished.

I wish the READY! For Kindergarten parent classes offered in Kennewick had existed when our children were young. I now know that there is much more that my husband and I could have done to upgrade and enhance the educational experiences of our now-adult darlings.

As their child's first teachers, I have watched parents take to heart the counsel offered by the Reading Foundation and the READY! classes. I've witnessed the school board's resolve in overcoming our reading deficits. The changes that Mr. Valiant is suggesting would kill these major strides that we've made over the last several years. For this reason I am voting for Dawn Adams and Heather Kintzley for Kennewick School Board.

WENDY FIELDING, Kennewick
