I listened to a discussion about a small class of sixth-graders in a "double class" who could not subtract 79 from 324. They could not "carry," a skill usually mastered in third or fourth grade.
What should be done when students are two or three years behind grade level in core subjects? Should the Kennewick School District try to bring the students up to grade level by placing them in extended (double) math or reading classes, or maintain the student in one math or reading class and an elective such as art or music? I believe in extended classes for students deficient in core areas.
I am a father of six children. Basic core subjects like reading and math were vital to my children's success both in and out of school. Making sure our children mastered these subjects was of utmost importance to me.
I'm voting for candidates Dawn Adams and Heather Kintzley, who will continue the successful Kennewick School District policy of assisting students with below-grade-level skills by extension of core subject classes.
