Kennewick port: Novakovich

At election time we often sit down to mark our ballots without a clear understanding of what we're asking our candidate to do. That's especially true for many folks who don't have personal interaction with ports.

In Washington, most of what we use, eat, and wear came to us through a port district. Conversely, most of what we grow, manufacture or produce locally moves out of our neighborhoods to the markets via a port -- not just to the U.S. but to the world. We're the most trade-dependent state in the union, and that trade activity is responsible for one out of every four jobs in the state.

Ports operate industrial sites, marinas, airports, docks and recreational facilities. They bring investment and economic development to their communities.

So this election day the Port of Kennewick district voter is in real luck. When you have a candidate whose honesty, business savvy, and leadership ability are all widely known and acknowledged, you can't miss. Add a demonstrable commitment to community and country, and the choice becomes doubly clear.

Skip Novakovich is willing to work for you in the port commissioner's chair. It'd be really wise to help him do that.

WANDA MUNN, Richland
