Benton fire: Clizbe

Why are Prosser city leaders trying so hard to influence the Benton County election for Fire District 3 commissioner?

In the Oct. 14 Prosser Record-Bulletin, four current and past city leaders wrote letters supporting the incumbent. Why? These people cannot even vote in this race, yet they're telling you who to elect.

I think Prosser city leaders fear the election of Richard Clizbe -- an independent thinker with extensive fire fighting and administrative knowledge -- will disrupt the existing old-boy network. I hope it does.

There needs to be positive change within the fire department. Three year ago your fire volunteers tried working from the inside to make things better. They were not supported by elected leaders. That's why three former fire volunteers have run for BCFD3 fire commissioner (Larry Mercer/ elected 2007; Richard Clizbe and Brian Gustin in 2009).

Most jobs require previous experience; we should demand the same of elected officials. Richard Clizbe knows first-hand about firefighting and department management. He is the most qualified person for this post.

This election is up to county voters. Ignore the city-induced smoke screen and elect a man who can make a difference. Vote Clizbe.

LINDA FREEPONS, Prosser
