I am a strong supporter of our trails and protected lands. How we choose to manage the land has an irreversible impact on our ability to enjoy our open spaces and stunning natural vistas. It also has a critical impact on wildlife habitat.
Look around. From the overpass at Highway 395 and Interstate 82, look at the awesome sculpture of our four local mountains. Now, houses encroach on the tops of the hillsides and the roads up the sides look like scars.
How much is enough? We don't even have to go to those extremes. The development behind Albertsons on Keene and Gage does a good job of incorporating a green belt and open space into the plan. At the corner of Keene and Brantingham on the other hand, did we need yet one more dental office directly behind existing houses? Drive by the homes behind it and see it as the neighborhood does. This was inappropriate and avoidable.
I also believe in dynamic growth in our community. What we are going to end up with though, requires that we care and have some intelligence and responsibility.
Speak up Tri-Cities! Our councils and planners work for us. They need to be held accountable to our vision of this community's future.
