Randy De Los Angeles, 19, of Kennewick, walks past a chewed down birch tree Monday afternoon on Clover Island Drive in Kennewick.
Tana Bader Inglima, director of governmental relations and marketing for the Port of Kennewick, said a family of beavers is living on the island. The trees had guards on them until outgrowing them since being planted four years ago, she said.
The port is planning to replace the tree and monitor another nearby that also has damage.
Bader Inglima said she can only remember one other tree that has been replaced, due to wind damage, since the island improvement project began in 2011.
