Fury is set at the end of World War II. Brad Pitt stars as tank commander Wardaddy Collier. After a long setup and the painful breaking in of a new recruit played nicely by Logan Lerman, the crew make a stand at a crossroads against an advancing Nazi army.
There is a lot to like about Fury. The acting by Pitt, Lerman, Shia LaBeouf, Michael Pena and Jon Bernthal and excellent action sequences keep this tank movie from tanking. You are told in bits, pieces and by broad hints why these guys are so close. I wanted more.
Longer movies are OK if there is a purpose for the length. Most directors can’t justify the length and put long, pointless cutaways and establishing shots into a movie to stretch it out. That happens too much in this one. If writer/director David Ayer ( Training Day) cuts 20 minutes, this is a much better film.
Or even better, use the extra length to tell me more about these soldiers.
