A car hit a light pole at Dupertail and Kennedy roads in Richland damaging an electrical cabinet at about 2 p.m. Sunday causing a loss of electricity to several businesses and about 500 homes.
“The car hit a street pole then the cabinet,” said Brian Cobb, electrical systems supervisor for the city of Richland. “It’ll be maybe six hours before we can get in there and fix the damage because we have to make it safe for the linemen first by deenergizing the area.”
He guessed the time could be longer but power should be restored by Monday morning.
No other details about the accident that caused the outage were available. When contacted, Capt. Mike Cobb of the Richland Police said the Washington State Patrol would investigate the accident.
"There are many reasons the Washington State Patrol will take over an investigation for other law enforcement agencies," Cobb said. "There may be special circumstances surrounding the case, or increase of call volume (through dispatch) at the time or objectivity. Because the WSP is now handling this case I can't confirm or deny anything. It's in their hands now."
The WSP trooper investigating the one car accident was not available for comment.
