Olympic Cellars and Coyote Canyon earned Best of Show honors and six other Washington wineries brought home gold from the 9th Annual Denver International Wine Competition held Sept. 7-8 at The Omni Interlocken Resort, Broomfield, Colorado. This competition is the largest double-blind, professionally judged wine competition in the Rocky Mountain region.
Olympic Cellars’ 2009 Cabernet Franc (Columbia Valley) was selected the Best Red Wine of the competition which featured more than 750 wines entered by winemakers from all over the world. Olympic Cellars’ Barn Nouveau 2011 Malbec earned a gold and Olympic’s 2009 Columbia Valley Syrah, a silver.
Of the 11 Double Gold medals awarded in the competition, two were claimed by Coyote Canyon Winery. Their 2009 Bozak Red Reserve Bordeaux blend (Horse Heaven Hills) was selected the competitions best Bordeaux blend and their 2011 Horse Heaven Hills Syrah was chosen the Best of Show Syrah. Coyote Canyon also earned gold for their 2011 Tres Cruces Grenache/Syrah/Mouvedre blend, their 2012 Albarino, 2011 H/H Buck Syrah and 2001 Downtown White, a Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Viognier.
Winemaker Robert Smasne and Smasne Cellars brought home seven medals, claiming gold for his 2010 Snipes Mountain Grenache, 2011 Snipes Mountain Mouvedre, 2010 Orange Muscat and Muscadel Ice Wine and for his 2009 Ancient Rocks, a Columbia Valley red Rhone blend. Smasne’s 2011 Carmenere and 2010 Syrah earned silver medals and his 2010 Konner Ray Red, a Bordeaux blend was awarded a bronze.

College Cellars earned gold for their 2012 Semillon and 2012 Carmenere, silver for their 2012 Riesling and bronze for their 2012 Walla Walla Syrah.
Davenport Cellars’ 2009 Continuity, a Bordeaux blend, earned silver as did the winery’s 2012 white blend, Snowflake.
Delille Cellars’ 2010 AIX red Rhone blend earned gold. Elevation Cellars earned gold for its 2010 Jammin’ red blend and silver for its 2009 Imperium Riesling. Icon Cellars earned bronze medals for its 2011 Columbia Valley Syrah and 2011 Icon Cellars du Pape, a GSM blend.
Ryan Patrick Vineyards won a gold for their 2012 Ryan’s Riesling and a silver for their 2012 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Trio Vintners earned Silver for its 2010 Flashpoint, an Italian red blend and bronze for its 2010 Grenache.
Westport Winery earned gold for its 2012 Gewurztraminer and 2012 Elk River Riesling.
Wild Rose Cellars earned silver for its 2012 Lavender Fields Forever Pino Gris and bronze for its 2012 Primitivo.
