The 2013 Southern Oregon World of Wine Festival which featured 179 wines from 46 wineries. A total of 13 gold medals were awarded this year, including 6 “double” gold medals, meaning that all three judges unanimously agreed on the award. A total of 69 silver medals were also awarded.
Best of Show honors went to Pebblestone Cellars for its 2012 Viognier and to Spangler Vineyards for its 2010 Claret. Meanwhile, Cuckoo’s Nest Cellars won Best of Show – Other Wine for its 2012 Fizzé. Several wineries received multiple awards, led by Schmidt Family Vineyards with six medals, and Pebblestone Cellars and Quady North with five medals each.
The awards were announced at a special awards dinner held at the conclusion of the judging on Aug. 9. The dinner, which was held at Hanley Farm and open for the first time to the general public, featured a gourmet 5-course meal prepared by the Jacksonville Inn, with each course specifically paired with one of the top medal-winning wines, including all three Best of Show wines. At the conclusion of the dinner, the judges for the wine competition, all Masters of Wine, spoke at length about the experience and their impressions of the wines they tasted.
“We’ve been very fortunate to attract some top judges and this year’s judges were impressed not just by the variety and quality of our wines, but also by the incredible potential of our region,” noted Les Martin, Chairman of the World of Wine Festival. “The consensus was that we are a wine region on the cusp of being discovered, so I think the future looks very positive indeed.”
The wine competition was judged by three internationally-recognized Masters of Wine. The prestigious Master of Wine (MW) title is bestowed by the Institute of Masters of Wine in London, and is considered the highest level of achievement for the wine industry. There are only 30 MWs in the United States. This year’s judges included Christy Canterbury, MW, author, speaker and wine judge based in New York; Peter Marks, MW, Vice President of Wine Education for Constellation Brands; and Jennifer Simonetti-Bryan, MW, author of The One Minute Wine Master: Discover 10 Wines You’ll Like in 60 Seconds or Less and a frequent guest on national television. The annual wine competition has repeatedly succeeded in attracting high profile wine judges, including 10 Masters of Wine over the past four years.
The World of Wine Festival features several events beginning with a Welcome Reception on August 21 and culminating in the Grand Tasting on August 24.
Included are several wine sensory classes, where attendees will have the opportunity to participate in critical wine tastings led by experts. There is also a Riedel glass seminar, which will provide the opportunity to sample medal winning wines in a variety of high-end Riedel wine glasses, with participants getting to keep the glasses (over a $100 value).
The Grand Tasting is scheduled for Aug. 24, from 6- 9 p.m., at Bigham Knoll in Jacksonville. All medal winning wines will be available to taste. The event also features a wide array of foods from local restaurants and shops, along with live music. A silent auction will offer unique wines, winemaker dinners, special get-a-ways, and lots of other great items. Half of the proceeds from the silent auction will be split between the Medford Food Project and the local 4-H Foundation.
