Attorneys representing a Richland flower shop owner are requesting a lawsuit alleging she discriminated against a gay couple be dismissed.
Alliance Defending Freedom, a non-profit legal team that takes on freedom of religion issues, filed the response to the lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union in Benton County Superior Court on Monday.
The ACLU filed the lawsuit against Barronelle Stutzman, owner of Arlene’s Flowers, on behalf of Robert Ingersoll and Curt Freed. Stutzman is also facing legal action from the Washington Attorney General’s Office for violating the state’s anti-discrimination laws, which the alliance is also fighting.
A spokesman for the alliance said in a release that the ACLU has no reason to force Stutzman to violate her religious beliefs to serve Ingersoll and Freed.
