Prosser council nixes curbside recycling

By the Herald staff

PROSSER -- The Prosser City Council rejected working a curbside recycling plan into its 2010 budget during a Tuesday workshop.

City Administrator Charlie Bush said several council members said curbside recycling could be well-suited for Prosser, but not now, when the city already is proposing irrigation and other fee increases next year.

"There's potential to talk about it in future years," Bush said Tuesday evening.

Bush said the council will consider putting new recycling receptacles around the city, which will allow residents to recycle a more diverse array of materials, including plastics.

The council did not formally vote on curbside recycling, but Bush said the city administration got the message.

The council did approve a measure increasing the city's property tax levy revenue 1 percent, which resulted in the Prosser's property tax levy rate decreasing from $3.33 per $1,000 of assessed property value, to $3.25 per $1,000 of assessed value.

The city's 2010 estimated assessed valuation increased about $45 million from 2009.
