Trick-or treater tips can keep kids safe

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

Law enforcement officers are hoping little ghosts and goblins stay safe as they trick or treat Saturday night.

Police say children should be dressed appropriately, have flashlights or other light sources, trick-or-treat in groups and stay alert when crossing the street.

Children also should never enter anyone's home or vehicle without their parents' permission, be accompanied by adults and have their candy checked before they eat it.

Parents also should be aware of what homes are safe to approach for trick or treating.

There are about 490 sex offenders registered in Benton County and those following the rules have their addresses listed on the sheriff's office website.
