Annual Dayton tour includes Victorian, Arts & Crafts homes

By Loretto J. Hulse, Herald food writer

DAYTON -- The annual Dayton Historic Home Tour featuring three Victorian homes, an Arts & Crafts bungalow and the Boldman House museum and garden is Sunday.

The tour is from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is sponsored by the Dayton Historical Depot Society.

The three Victorian homes have been beautifully renovated and decorated to reflect the charm of that era. Two of them have been on the tour before, but one has new owners who have done extensive interior restoration and decorating. And the other home has had new landscaping as well as extensive interior renovations done.

The bungalow from the Arts & Crafts movement was a single-family home originally. Later it was converted into a duplex, and then in 1989 was converted back to a single-family rental.

Last year the owners began an extensive renovation and it is now a large, two-story vacation rental home completely furnished in the style of the period.

There's also an additional chance to view one of Dayton's historic houses. Next door to one of the homes on the tour is a renovated 1903 Victorian that's for sale and the owners are holding an open house Sunday.

The Boldman House museum is a Queen Anne Victorian listed on local, state and national registers. The Boldman House and garden have both been completely renovated and reflect the styles and tastes of America in the early 1900s. On display throughout the house are many antique and vintage personal items from the Boldman family.

The tour starts at the Dayton Depot, 222 E. Commercial St., where you buy or pick up pre-paid tickets, plus receive a copy of the guidebook and map. From there set your own direction and pace. Docents and homeowners will be at each house to give tours.

Cost is $10 per person with all proceeds benefiting the Dayton Historic Depot. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the depot at 509-382-2026 or buy them at the depot the day of the tour.

Dayton's Artwalk also will be taking place the same weekend. In the upstairs gallery of the depot there will be an art show of pieces created by many Columbia County artists.

The depot will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

The Dayton Depot is on the corner of Second and Commercial streets -- just off Main Street in downtown Dayton, behind Sterling Savings Bank.
