CBC fall quarter applications due early -- Aug. 13

By Sara Schilling, Herald staff writer

PASCO -- People who want to start taking fall quarter classes at Columbia Basin College must apply for admission by Aug. 13.

The new admissions application deadline affects only new students, who must fill out an application to be accepted to the college before registering for courses.

"We're attempting to help students and their families recognize that you need to take care of business early," said Maddy Jeffs, vice president for student services.

Research has shown that students who apply late and therefore register for classes late struggle more than their peers, according to CBC.

Fall quarter starts Sept. 21. The admissions application deadline is new for fall quarter. Prospective students in the past had been able to apply until classes started, CBC said.

The application itself doesn't take long to complete. But after students apply, they must take placement tests in reading, writing and math so officials know whether they're college-ready or need remedial help, Jeffs said.

CBC also has a required 12-hour orientation workshop held before classes start that's meant to help students prepare for and adjust to college life.

If they miss the workshop because of a late application, they must take it after classes have started. It's most beneficial to students when they take it beforehand, Jeffs said.

She said there may be exceptions to the application deadline. For example, some programs may be designed to accept students throughout the quarter. If students have concerns about a specific program, they should contact the program director, Jeffs said.

The enrollment and admissions office is at 542-4524.
