Two Benton Fire District 1 firefighters and a support volunteer were recently recognized for their service to the department.
Capt. Bob Trainor was selected as the 2008 Fire Officer of the Year for leading by example and the public events he introduced to the Badger Canyon Fire Station, said Division Chief Mike Harris.
Trainor started the annual pancake feed, open house and fire safety day for the Young Marines at the station 150 on Badger Road. He has been a volunteer member of the fire district since 2000.
Rob Moore, a volunteer firefighter since 2001, was named the 2008 Firefighter of the Year for his "can do" attitude and the initiative he takes at his station to make things happen without being asked, Harris said.
Moore works at station 110 on the corner of 27th Avenue and Olympia Street in Kennewick.
Moore also has a congenial and outgoing personality that helps him interact well with the community, and volunteers for several public education events around the district, Harris said.
Alyssa LoParco, a recent River View High graduate, was named the 2008 Incident Support Service Volunteer of the Year.
LoParco found time to volunteer for the fire district while also finishing high school and attending Running Start at Columbia Basin College, Harris said.
She also participated in sports for the Finley school and was an officer for Future Farmers of America.
She was nominated because of her high degree of dedication in all areas of her life, including to the fire district, he said.
Fire District 1 also had two longtime members retire: Lt. Larry Pederson, who had 28 years of service, and firefighter Dale Fish, who retired after 34 years.
The fire district is looking for volunteer firefighters at all station and support service volunteers, Harris said.
