BENTON CITY -- A public workshop to discuss progress on bringing water to about 2,000 acres on Red Mountain is planned at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 9 in Benton City.
Officials with the Kennewick Irrigation District and Tom Tebb, regional director for the Washington Department of Ecology, will lead the meeting at the Terra Blanca Winery, 34715 N. DeMoss Road.
About two dozen property owners petitioned the irrigation district in February 2007 to form a Local Improvement District so they could get water that would foster development of wineries on Red Mountain.
The public workshop will allow landowners and the public to ask questions about the efforts to bring the water, said Scott Revell, KID's district planner.
Tebb and KID President John Jaksch will give opening statements and then there will be updates about the water permit application, work being done by a consultant and various issues involving the environment and electrical power, Revell said.
All property owners who originally requested the LID have been invited to the workshop, but anyone may attend.
Revell said the LID would pay the cost of developing the irrigation system. "The people on Red Mountain will pay for it. The people in town won't," explained Revell, adding that the water committed to Red Mountain will not come from KID water that supplies existing customers.
For more information about the proposed Red Mountain project, go to the district's website, www.kid.org and to the link marked "projects."
People who are unable to attend the workshop can submit written comments or questions to Revell at srevell@kid. org.
