Driver in fatal crash improving at hospital

By Paula Horton, Herald staff writer

EPHRATA -- The driver of a car involved in a fatal crash near Ephrata is improving at a Seattle hospital.

Juan Vicente Lopez Cuara, 27, of Quincy, is in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center. He is being treated for a head injury and broken pelvis and arm, the Washington State Patrol said.

His passenger, Juana Estrada Ibarra, 43, of Quincy, died at the scene.

The crash occurred when Lopez Cuara pulled a 1992 Buick Century onto the Highway 283 shoulder, tried to make a U-turn and turned in front of a van that was behind him.
