Officials confirm fifth case of West Nile virus in state

By the Herald staff

The state's fifth case of West Nile virus in a horse has been confirmed in a thoroughbred that died in Yakima County near Ahtanum Ridge, state Department of Agriculture officials said.

Blood samples taken from the 17-year-old horse, which died Thursday, confirmed it had the virus. It was not vaccinated against the virus, officials said.

Horses are most at risk in August and September. Disease symptoms include loss of coordination and appetite, fever, stiffness, confusion and muscle weakness, particularly in the hindquarters.

Vaccination is the best way to protect horses from infection, and horse owners also should try to reduce mosquito populations on their property by removing standing water.
