The animated Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return sends the Kansas kid back to Oz to deal with a new threat. Glee star Lea Michelle gives voice and musical vocals to Dorothy. She's assisted by old pros Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi and Kelsey Grammer, who do Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man.
Martin Short is the villainous Jester who is using his now dead wicked witch sister's broom to wreak havoc.
After being beamed back to Oz on a rainbow, Dorothy is unable to connect with her old friends. So she teams up with Wiser, a way-too-chatty owl and a stuffy soldier Marshal Mallow, who falls in love with a china princess. They're voiced by Oliver Platt and Hugh Dancy.
Not much in Dorothy's Return is original. Nor is the animation from directors Will Finn and Dan St. Pierre creative. Parts of Baum's story are clever, but writers Adam Balsam and Randi Barnes give it a Saturday morning cartoon treatment.
Adults will be bored. Children under the age 12 will like the movie and have a pretty good time. Those older than 12 will join their parents for a good snooze.
