I almost went to the wrong theater for the Ride Along screening. In retrospect, that might not have been so bad. For sure, it's going to make my worst list at year's end. We all understand competition for parts is horrendous in Hollywood, and Ice Cube hasn't seen much work lately. But is Kevin Hart -- who is really hot right now -- so desperate that he needs to do a movie this bad?
To clarify, I really like Cube, who should do more movies, and it's impossible not to like Hart. Just not in this movie. Or in a sequel. That's another thing that bothers me about Ride Along. All through the film, I'm distracted. I'm thinking, "Oh, my god, they're going to do a sequel." By the way, a quick check on IMDB shows one has been "announced."
Cube is always terrific. The charismatic Cube is a master of the snarl, and monotone, minimalist dialogue. Hart is easy to like in a supporting role. Give him too much to do, and he's irritating. Ride Along has Hart rapidly blabbering high-pitched dialogue like someone who has inhaled too much helium.
A hard-core detective played by Cube is out to capture an elusive, never-before-seen master criminal. At the same time, he's trying to discourage Hart, playing his sister's boyfriend from a) becoming her husband, and b) becoming a cop. To do so, Cube's James invites Hart's Ben on a ridealong.
Never miss a local story.
You can pretty much write the plot line yourself and would probably do a better job.
