Reggie is a Thanksgiving Turkey pardoned thanks to the urging of the president's insistent young daughter. The president -- cleverly -- sounds like Bill Clinton and his precocious daughter talk 180-miles an hour with gusts up to 220 and then suddenly falls asleep. She's a hoot.
Then Reggie gets kidnapped by Jake, a mostly brainless turkey commando on a mission to get Reggie into the past so they can get the Pilgrims to change the Thanksgiving menu to something other than Turkey. The birds in early America are smart, organized and keeping the settlers from catching and eating them.
One more fun thing. Star Trek icon George Takei has a blast doing the voice of S.T.E.V.E., the machine that takes them back in time. Owen Wilson is Reggie and Woody Harrelson does Jake. Amy Poehler, David Keith, Dan Fogler and Colm Meany round out the cast.
The first half-hour of Free Birds is kind of fun. Not the most fun you've had at an animated feature, but clever enough to get you a smile or two. The next hour is a totally different and is as dull as Thanksgiving leftovers.
