ATHENA, Ore. -- Legends remembered and legends being made are what the Caledonian Games are all about.
And the tiny town of Athena goes big-time with its annual festival, which is July 11-13 at the town's park.
"Coming to Athena's Caledonian Games means to create old legends by teaching youngsters about famous Scots and their stories," says Sue Friese, president of the event. "It's an educational experience walking through the park during this event. It's all about music, dancing, food and friends."
Besides the storytelling and games, other festivities planned throughout the weekend include music, authentic Scottish food to sample, and sheep dog trials.
Never miss a local story.
It all starts at 5:30 p.m. July 11 at City Park, when the Scottish Outfitters go all out serving authentic Scottish meat pies, sausage rolls, shepherd's pies and baked beans. Dessert includes strawberry shortcake and homemade lemonade like you've never tasted, Friese added.
After the dinner, there will be a candle-lighting service at 7:30 p.m., followed by the outdoor showing of the movie Brigadoon at 8:30 p.m. There is no cost other than for food.
Festivities July 12 start at 7 a.m. with the sheep dog trials at the Weston-McEwen High School athletic field, 540 E. Main St., Athena.
Vendor booths open at 8 a.m. at the park, and the parade down Main Street starts at 9 a.m. The opening ceremony for the games starts at 10 a.m., followed by piping competitions, a concert by Skweez the Weezle Celtic Band, Celtic harp concert by Janet Naylor, and storytelling by Mary Finney. The evening concert, featuring the Boise Highlanders Pipe Band, Sir James McDonald Pipe Band and the Weston-McEwen Pipes and Drum band, starts at 6:30 p.m. in the playing field at the high school. Admission is $5.
On July 13, the sheep dog trials begin at 8 a.m., followed by an outdoor church service at City Park and music by Naylor. July 13 activities continue until 3 p.m.
