The Sound of Music, a Mid-Columbia Musical Theatre production, will be a part of the grand opening ceremonies for the new Reach center, which overlooks the Columbia River in Richland.
The beloved musical about the singing Von Trapp family will be performed at the Reach's outdoor theater starting July 4 with additional performances July 6 and 10-13.
A unique aspect of the show is that it is double cast, which means different people will play the lead roles on different nights.
Tri-City actors Greg Fryhling and Paul Davis will share the role of Capt. Von Trapp. Each said sharing the role was a new adventure and a great learning experience.
Never miss a local story.
"In preparing for the show, it becomes more challenging because each cast member gets about half the rehearsal time than they would have otherwise," Fryhling said. "But once you get on stage, you are immersed in the show and you simply give the best performance you can."
Davis says watching Fryhling and his cast members has been time well spent.
"It's been helpful to see my character's movement on the stage from the audience's perspective," he said. "And several times, I've seen Greg do something that makes me say, 'Oh, that's cool. I'll have to try that.' Performing on alternate nights also strikes me as a fine idea."
Jo Brodzinski is directing the show, Margaret Dunn is costumer and Karl Hedland will direct a 25-piece orchestra.
The Sound of Music follows the story of a widowed Austrian sea captain who hires a novice nun, Maria, to be a nanny for his seven children.
Maria teaches the children to sing and brings music back into the stiff, regimented Von Trapp household. The captain and Maria eventually fall in love but must flee Austria when Hitler's Gestapo force him into service in the German Navy. The musical is based on the real Von Trapp Family singers.
Tickets cost $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $15 for 18 and younger and are available at www.ShopTheReach.org. All showtimes are 7 p.m. The Reach center is off Columbia Park Trail at the west end of Columbia Park.
