About 200 amateur chalk artists will gather June 14 at the Uptown Shopping Center in Richland for the annual Chalk Art Festival, sponsored by Uptown merchants.
"We'll have an exciting new event at this year's festival, an Art Walk," said Gus Sako, owner of Octopus' Garden. The Art Walk will feature photographs of winning pieces in storefront windows in the Uptown Shopping Center.
The festival starts with registration at 9 a.m. Judging starts at noon and winners announced at 4 p.m. The Art Walk begins at 4:30 p.m.
Cost to take part is $5 for ages 9 and younger, $7 for ages 10 to 17 and $12 for those 18 and older, and the cost includes the chalk. Prizes range from cash awards to gift certificates.
"The 9 and younger participants receive a goodie bag, and all other age groups are judged and prizes awarded," Sako said.
Last year, more than 150 chalk artists took part in the festival, and Sako expects more than 170 this year.
"The art ranges from exuberant scribbling by the youngest kids up through amazing landscapes, comic interpretations and fool-the-eye pieces," Sako said.
Hundreds of spectators usually show up to watch the art being created, he added.
