RICHLAND -- The Volta Piano Trio's soothing piano, cello and violin sounds can be heard Feb. 22 at a Camerata Musica concert.
The group is made up of Jennifer Caine on violin, Oksana Ezhokina on piano and Sally Singer Tuttle on cello.
"We've been playing together as a trio for seven years, and Oksana and I have played together for 15 years," Tuttle said.
Music critics have described the trio's appeal as a blend of finesse and tone quality, and praise the women for their honest approach to the scores they play.
Never miss a local story.
"Our international backgrounds have provided rich experiences for each of us to draw from and share," Tuttle told the Herald via email. "But most of all, I think it's the freshness of our interpretations that make us special."
Tuttle grew up in Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, England. Ezhokina is a Russian-born pianist. Caine is from Washington, D.C.
Tuttle was 8 years old when a teacher at her school offered either violin or cello lessons, and she was eager to try out the cello.
"Then as a teen, I fell in love with chamber music," she said.
She also teaches cello and bass performance at Whitman College in Walla Walla.
Caine started playing the violin at age 3 and began lessons at 4.
"My parents introduced me to piano and violin (because) they are not musicians but music lovers," she said.
She also is a member of the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts ensemble, based in Leavenworth. She holds a degree in music and Slavic languages and literature from Harvard University, as well as a master's degrees from the Royal College of Music and Oxford University.
Ezhokina performs frequently in the U.S. and Europe as a guest musician on various radio programs. She currently serves as chairwoman for the piano studies division at Pacific Lutheran University in Seattle, as well as artistic director of classical music programs at the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts.
The concert is at 8 p.m. Cost to attend the Tri-City concert is free, but seating is limited in the Battelle Auditorium, on Battelle Boulevard, off George Washington Way in Richland.
