The February art exhibition at the Allied Arts Gallery in Richland will feature sparkling sculptures and visions of spring.
Richland watercolor artist Lisa Hill and mixed-media sculptor Molly Painter of West Richland will blend their unique art for a dazzling display of sequined sculptures and vivid-colored flowers on canvas to give viewers a yearning for spring.
A reception for the artists is from 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 9 at the gallery, 89 Lee Blvd.
Painter says she hopes her work encourages viewers to rethink their preconceptions of art.
Never miss a local story.
"Just when does a tuna sandwich shared with friends become a masterpiece?" she states on her website. "Is the collection of neckties a closet installation? Why isn't that bottle cap worth an essay?"
She invites people to view her work with an open mind and experience a challenging stay, she says.
Painter is a Richland park ranger when not creating her unique artwork.
Hill is a master gardener, horticulturist and landscape artist who taught herself to paint and focused her talent among the floral and fauna of nature.
"Most of the paintings in the show were created in the last 18 months," Hill said. "I really enjoy trying out new subjects, techniques, viewpoints and color schemes so my theme is very broad."
The common thread among her work is the traditional watercolor paint on watercolor paper she uses.
"Some artists feel only a cohesive body of work should be presented at shows, that your style and technique should be instantly recognizable," Hill said. "I prefer to bring more variety to my viewers and myself."
She does that by creating paintings that engage the viewer, whether it be the inquisitive look of a barn owl in winter, a brilliant bouquet of orange blossoms or a softly transparent collage of undersea creatures.
"I seek to capture the fleeting nature of nature on paper," Hill said. "To show the viewer what I saw in the moment and preserve the memory."
The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. There is no admission fee.
