PROSSER, Wash. -- Twenty-six hot air balloons will blaze a colorful trail across the big blue sky at this year's Great Prosser Balloon Rally from Sept. 28-30.
Balloonists from all over the Northwest will lift off about 6 a.m. each day, weather permitting, from the Prosser Airport, 11 Nunn Road.
"It's great family fun to watch the hot air balloons splash and dash in the Yakima river," said Morgan Everett, chairman of the event.
Jim Milne, Prosser's chamber president, says visitors won't want to miss the street-painting chalk art festival, either, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30 in downtown Prosser.
Never miss a local story.
"And if you're feeling artsy, we can fix that," Milne said. "Because anyone can join in the fun for just $5. We'll provide chalk and the space to show off your talents. We had more than 200 canvases created at last year's event."
There also will be a harvest festival from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 30 that includes arts and crafts and a balloon rally memorabilia booth.
The balloon pilot reception starts at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 28, followed by a street dance at 7 p.m., all in the downtown area.
After the balloons lift off at 6 a.m. Sept. 29, there will be a pancake breakfast served by the National Honor Society at Keene-Riverview Elementary School, 832 Park Ave. There will be a small charge for the chow.
The farmers market runs from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 29 on Sommers Avenue between the Prosser Public Library and City Park.
The night glow festivities start at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 29 at Art Fiker Stadium on Paterson Road in Prosser. A barbecue will be available as well as beverages while steel drum bands Bram Brata and OK2Botay entertain. The balloons will illuminate after dark.
Sept. 30 festivities include balloons in the sky by 6 a.m., followed by a breakfast starting at 8 a.m. at the Prosser Senior Activity Center on Seventh Street.
