Marianne Larsen had an idea last year that she hoped would provide a place and opportunity for high school kids to indulge in a singing and dancing experience -- Glee-style.
"My goal through this is to not only produce a great show but to teach the performers that with some discipline and the right platform their talents can influence people (in a positive way)," she said.
The show choir Forte! is made up of about 20 high school kids from around the Mid-Columbia. The group's spring performance, Beach Party, will be at 7 p.m. May 18 in the Art Fuller Auditorium at Kennewick High School.
Music to be performed includes all the great songs from such movies as Footloose and Wizard of Oz, as well as classic rock songs by The Beach Boys and post-disco era songs from the 1980s.
Forte! is open to any high school age person interested in song and dance. Auditions are held biannually in June and December each year.
"We are the show choir arm of our parent nonprofit organization Tri-City Youth Choir," Larsen said. "We have worked with professional choreographers, recording studios and costumers who have given their heart and resources to ensure this group is successful."
"These are high-output kids. They excel in their academics, play sports, play all sorts of instruments, are leaders in their church youth groups, hold student council positions, play lead roles in school plays and some have jobs or run their own small business."
The group rehearses every Thursday night and occasionally Saturdays, and performs about two shows a year at Christmas and in the spring. There is no cost to take part.
"We are currently looking for our next group of performers," Larsen added.
Auditions for the group's Christmas concert will be June 2 at the Academy of Ballet. A time will be announced later. For more information, go online to www.yourtcyc.com or call 947-4429.
