Yates earned his nickname from rapper Black Walt because of his rhyming method. Walt compared it to the Tec-9 semiautomatic pistol, which he described as a lightning fast rhyming style.
Yates later applied a deeper meaning to the name, claiming that it stood for the complete technique of rhyme, with 'tech' meaning technique and 'nine' representing a number of completion.
He has released 15 albums since 1999 and has been featured in more than a dozen films.
