The second weekend in May will bring rainbow hues to the skies over Walla Walla as hot air balloons come to town for the 36th annual Balloon Stampede.
The May 7-9 Balloon Stampede is one of the largest hot air balloon rallies in the Northwest.
The Walla Walla County Fairgrounds is the site for almost all of the activities. Hours are 3 to 9 p.m. May 7; 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. May 8; and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 9.
On May 7 only the balloons will be at various schools scattered throughout town.

Weather permitting, the balloons will launch at 6:30 a.m. from the fairgrounds and Garrison Middle School May 8-9. A pancake breakfast for $5 per person will be served until 10 a.m. following the launches.
At the fairgrounds, there will be arts and crafts and food vendors. The main stage will feature a variety of entertainment from acrobats to singers.
There will be a reception at the community building at the fairgrounds from 5 to 7:30 p.m. May 7. This is a full dinner, catered by Jacobi's Cafe of Walla Walla, and reservations are required. Cost is $20 and tickets are available through the chamber office, 509-525-0850. A dance follows from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the main stage.
Other events include a run/walk May 8. It begins at 9 a.m. at the fairgrounds. Cost is $5 or $20 with a T-shirt. For more information, call 509-301-1859.

Classic cars will be displayed at the fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The popular Nite Glow show also is scheduled May 8.
