KENNEWICK -- Ready for a blast of Christmas cheer? Then pack up the kids and head to the Mid-Columbia Symphony's holiday concert.
The fun starts at 3 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Three Rivers Convention Center in Kennewick.
The symphony's orchestra manager Justin Raffa promises a festive afternoon of fun, fabulous music as well as a visit from Santa Claus.
The concert is all about having a joyful and casual day with the family, Raffa said.
Even symphony conductor Nicholas Wallin will trade in his traditional tuxedo and lead the orchestra in more casual attire.
"We want this to be an informal event, which is why Nick won't be wearing his usual tuxedo," Raffa said. "And it wouldn't be Christmas without Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride and that's just how we'll be kicking off this concert."
The audience will get a good dose of familiar holiday music both secular and sacred, performed by the orchestra as well as the guest choruses.
Under Raffa's direction, the Mastersingers will sing a medley of carols that will take the audience on a musical journey through the 12 Days of Christmas.
The piece spoofs the original song by replacing each of the 12 days with a different musical flavor from Gregorian chants to the patriotic tunes of John Philip Sousa.
"This is really a hoot," Raffa said. "My favorite part of this piece is when the orchestra replaces the eight maids a milking part with (a segment from) Flight of the Valkyries."
Making the concert even more appealing to children will be performances by the Three Rivers Youth Chorus, which is a 33-member group of Mid-Columbia singers in grades 2-8.
The chorus, also under Raffa's direction, will sing Jingle Bells as well as the Italian Christmas carol Dormi, Dormi, which the kids will sing in Italian.
