Doug Sutherland
Party: Republican
Candidate for: Commissioner of Public Lands
Incumbent? Yes
Age: 70
Hometown: Spokane, WA
Occupation: Commissioner of Public Lands
50-word statement:
Doug Sutherland grew up in Eastern Washington working farms and fighting forest fires as a smokejumper, so caring for the land comes naturally. A former small business owner, Doug knows that good business and environmentally responsible stewardship go hand in hand. He's endorsed by the Farm Bureau and Fire Chiefs.
Three priorities:
1. Preventing further fragmentation and conversion of forest and farmland to other uses. Across the state, we need to keep forest and farmland productive by making sure that foresters and farmers have the freedom to work their land and earn a living. A major part of that effort was our recent land exchange, so there are large blocks of land to farm, hunt and for habitat.
2. Working with wineries and local communities to develop Red Mountain as a tourist destination. Lease revenue from this superior vineyard land helps fund school construction in Washington.
3. While the Lands Commissioner does not deal with nuclear power, Doug will continue to work with foresters and farmers to develop alternative fuels from wood and agricultural waste as a domestic supply of fuel that is clean and renewable.
