They didn’t know it growing up, but Reka Robinson and Gunner Jackson were destined to one day host one of the most popular morning radio shows in the Tri-Cities.
Both grew up in the Seattle area and attended rival high schools about the same time.
“Our parents to this day live around the corner from each other, but we never knew each other,” Robinson said.
They both ended up in the Tri-Cities and began hosting Reka & Gunner in the Morning on Power 99.1 FM in September 2013.
“I love being able to come in in the morning and talk pop culture and relationship stuff and just being real,” Jackson said.
The duo, who have both previously worked in larger markets, said the Tri-City market size allows them to better interact with listeners.
“We’ve both done radio in different cities, and being in bigger markets, it’s harder to connect,” Robinson said.
Robinson lived in Pasco until she was 3 and has deep ties to the Tri-City community. Virgie Robinson Elementary School in Pasco is named after her grandmother.
“Even though it’s not Seattle, it still kind of feels like home,” she said.
Listener support is what fuels the duo’s love of being radio personalities.
“It’s incredible to hear from listeners that have been tuned in since the first month we were on the radio,” Jackson said. “We wouldn’t be here without them. We owe them all the thanks in the world for listening and being a part of our little family.”
“Our little dysfunctional family,” Robinson added.
Reka and Gunner are live on air weekdays from 5:30 to 10 a.m. on Power 99.1.
