Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Memorial Day — all major holidays are busy for Arlene’s Flowers, but Mother’s Day is the biggest.
“Everyone has a mother,” said owner Barronelle Stutzman, who bought the business from her mother after she had purchased the company from the original owner, Arlene Douglas.
In the 19 years that Stutzman has owned the shop, the biggest change has been the “flower getter.”
It used to be that to send flowers, someone would call a middle man who would place the order and charge a substantial fee, without passing it on to the florist. Now customers are more likely to use the Internet to place an order directly at a shop.

She said that through her website, arlenesflowers.com, customers can save themselves time and money, while still supporting a local business and getting great service and fresh flowers.
“It’s a different market now with the Internet and Facebook and Twitter,” Stutzman said, “but we’re always reaching out to the customer.”
For customers who like to shop in person, the Richland store gives them face-to-face contact with a florist and the chance to handle select arrangements.
For those buying flowers from a distance or on the run, the website is a convenient tool with the same personalized service, Stutzman said.
“We just want to thank all those who support us,” she said.
