Washington companies penalized by EPA

Pratik Joshi, Herald staff writer

Two Washington companies will pay the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to settle alleged violations of some provisions of the Clean Air Act, EPA announced today, Sept. 22.

Wenatchee-based Dovex Fruit Co. and Toppenish-based Washington Beef stored large quantities of anhydrous ammonia at their facilities without having a risk management program in place.

Dovex will shell out more than $98,000, while Washington Beef will pay more than $25,000 and spend at least $90,000 to install a new internal ammonia alarm system and related equipment to improve safety.

Risk management plans have been required for facilities that use, handle, or store more than 10,000 pounds of anhydrous ammonia since June 21, 1999.
