Buy hybrid car in 2009, don't pay sales tax

Pratik Joshi, Herald staff writer

Thinking of buying a vehicle?

You may be able to save some money if you buy a new clean alternative fuel vehicle or a hybrid that gets at least 40 miles per gallon highway.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2009, such vehicles will be exempt from sales tax.

The exemption, which was enacted by the Legislature in 2005, will be valid through the end of 2010. It includes the 0.3 percent motor vehicle sales tax. It's expected to save buyers about $18.6 million over next two years.

The exemptions also generally apply to leases and out-of-state purchases of new qualifying vehicles. For more information, visit http://dor.wa.gov/Content/AboutUs/newsroom/html/SalesTaxExemption.aspx
