Free money available to reduce diesel pollution

Pratik Joshi, Herald staff writer

Owners of public and private diesel-powered fleets and heavy duty equipment can apply for a grant to retrofit exhaust emission control and idle reduction technologies on their vehicles and machinery.

Local and state civic agencies including port and transit authorities will get priority consideration for a slice of $2.5 million that is being distributed by the state Department of Ecology.

Businesses that help provide public services like refuse collection, construction of public roads and buildings, or operate their equipment on port properties are second in line, followed by other privately owned vehicles. Private businesses and individuals will receive money only to retrofit exhaust emission controls.

Deadline to apply is June 6, but applications will be accepted while money is still available. Award notices will be sent by e-mail in early July.

Application can be downloaded at http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/cars/DieselGrantPage.htm

Applications should be mailed to Department of Ecology, Air Quality Program, PO Box 47600, Lacey, WA 98504-7600, Attn: Rod Tinnemore, program contact.

Rod Tinnemore can be reached at 360-407-6978 or rtin461@ecy.wa.gov
